Repair or Replace Your Restaurant Furniture?

    Last updated 5 months ago

When you set out to renovate or redesign a restaurant, keeping costs low is usually a major priority. But keeping a renovation budget to a reasonable limit means making some tough decisions. Is it more cost-effective, for example, to replace the furniture in your establishment or to have it reupholstered?

Here are some factors to consider before you make that choice:

Chairs: Arguably the most important piece of furniture in a restaurant, the chair has a double function: It has to please your customer in the aesthetic sense and be comfortable to sit on. With professional reupholstering, you can meet both expectations by giving the chair an entirely new surface and appearance. If you want a new shape, size, or material for your chairs, however, replacement is probably the better option.

Tables: Since tables probably receive the most direct wear and tear of anything in a restaurant, having them reupholstered from time to time is usually more cost-effective than replacing them. Replacing your tables, however, does allow you to experiment with different types of tables. A recent Cornell study found that restaurants tend to do better business with a variety of different table sizes, rather than tables of uniform size that can be pushed together to create larger ones.

Booths and Banquettes: The sedentary nature of restaurant booths makes them a special challenge for renovation, since finding the right location for every booth or banquette and table is key to a restaurant's success. If you have bought a restaurant with booths already in place and you want to relocate them, then it may make more sense to replace them altogether. If you want to leave them where they are, but give them a different appearance, then you can upgrade their upholstery.

Renovating Your Restaurant? Consider Upgrading Your Furniture Upholstery

    Last updated 5 months ago

Every restaurant needs a new look once in a while. While planning your restaurant's renovation, don't overlook the furniture. After the food itself; the chairs, tables, and booths are the parts of your restaurant that your customers are going to come into the closest contact with. It makes sense to put as much thought into the way your furniture looks and feels as you would into any other important element of your restaurant.

Reupholstering your furniture offers a number of benefits, including:

    • After many years of use, furniture inevitably becomes worn, frayed, or cracked—particularly in a restaurant, where the tables and chairs see continual use. Unfortunately, when your customers see that, it reflects on your establishment. Having your furniture reupholstered allows you to transform flawed furniture into tables, chairs, and booths that look as new as the day you bought them.
    • If you can afford it, then it's always worth it to buy all-new furniture. If that isn't a cost-effective option for you at the moment, however, you can have your restaurant's tables, chairs, and booths reupholstered at a fraction of the cost of purchasing new ones.
    • Reupholstering your furniture also allows you to reimagine the look of your entire restaurant. As many restaurant experts have argued, the design of your restaurant is becoming the most important factor in customers' decision to eat there. Simply by changing the color or texture of your tables and chairs, you can change your business's interior into that of an up-scale restaurant, a theme restaurant, or a chic modern restaurant with appealingly sleek, minimalist designs. Even bathrooms can become sophisticated and stylish with the right décor.

Commercial Seating Specialists has been providing superb, beautifully crafted restaurant furnishings—including booths, tables, and custom upholstery—to San Jose customers for more than 35 years.
